Topic: M-9 " Sharing the Road"
Date: March 9th 2023
What I learned from this class:
• Sharing the Road with Vulnerable Users — Pedestrians, cyclists, moped and scooter operators,
motorcyclists, users of motorized mobility aids, etc.
• Sharing the Road with Heavy Vehicle — Trucks, tractor-trailers, tractor semi-trailers, road trains, intercity
motor coaches, city buses, school buses, emergency vehicles
• 9 demerit points if you do not yield 5 meters from a school buss that it stopped with their red lights.
• Speed limit in a school zone could be 30/40/50 km
• Different types of vulnerable users — Pedestrians, cyclists, moped and scooter operators, motorcyclists,
users of motorized mobility aids
• Characteristics — Less well protected and more likely to be inured in a collision
• Remember — Pay special attention to them. Maintain adequate safety margins
• Children can be unpredictable. They may cross the street between intersections suddenly and appear
from between parked cars.
• Collisions between bicycles and road vehicles are responsible for the majority of cyclist deaths, i.e.
more than 80%. The same kind of accident also causes 20% to 25% of cyclist hospitalizations.
• EMERGENCY VEHICLES — Yield the right of way. Allow unhindered passage as soon as you hear a
siren or see flashing lights in your mirrors
• MOVE OVER LAW IN QUEBEC — Safely free up the lane in which the emergency vehicle is travelling
and stop your vehicle, if necessary
Your feedback: They showed video about blind spots and it was really great.

What I learned from this class: In this class we learned about eco deriving and the
basics of preparing your car for driving. Something unique that I learned was the
specific steps to take when preparing to drive somewhere (i.e. close and lock
doors, key in ignition, adjust your seat and headrest, adjust the three mirrors,
ensure good ventilation, fasten your seatbelt (and make sure everyone has theirs
on)!
Your feedback: I really enjoyed this class, the activity of describing your
favourite/dream car was one of the most engaging.

Topic: M-11 Fatigue and Distraction
Date: 2023-01-27
What I learned from this class:
Fatigue is one of the most dangerous things that can result in accidents. To avoid
it its better to avoid traveling at night, take naps every 2 hours when having long
trips, do not drive if we are tired or starting to have signs of fatigue.
In addition to that we should also avoid distraction specially texting while driving
because having our eyes off the road for even 4-6 seconds can cause fatal
accidents.
Your feedback:
Good as always. Great communication and cooperation in the class. All questions
were answered with care and patience.

Student Full Name: Osandi Siyara Pallemulla Hewage
Topic: Module 2: The Driver
Date: 01/13/2023
What I learned from this class:
I learnt about the importance of values as well as the influence of positive and
negative peer pressure. From the ‘Portrait of a Driver’ activity, I was able to
evaluate my friend’s driving ability and reflect on her main qualities, faults and
possible areas of improvement. This allowed me to draw a comparison with
other, more experienced drivers, such as my parents. By understanding their
faults, I know not to make the same mistake. This includes ensuring that the
driver and passengers wear the seatbelt at all times, ensuring that the driver does
not drive under the influence and is responsible as well as ensuring that
distractions (conversations, using the cellphone, etc.) is kept to a minimum. The
lesson helped me understand the criteria required to be a safe, cooperative and
responsible driver, that does not give into negative pressure and respects the HSC
Your feedback:
The class was very informative and Mr. Rashid gave a lot of personal accounts and
examples of when he has witnessed others’ driving in risky situations. Not only
does this teach us to keep an eye of other road users, it also helps us understand
and avoid making any similar mistakes. The session was interactive, and the
activities allow us to learn from each other’s mistakes. Mr. Rashid ensures that we
understand the concepts well and even gives us positive constructive criticism so
that we are well prepared for the knowledge test.

Student Full Name: Morgan Alice Gagnon
Topic: Phase 1, Module 2 - The Driver
Date: Friday, January 13th, 2023
What I learned from this class:
In this class we learned about the profile of a safe, responsible, and cooperative
driver, what positive and negative pressures are, different norms of driving, and
different influences that can affect your driving.
Something specific that I learned when we were discussing media influences was
how tools/gadgets in cars like blindspot cameras can be helpful, but can also
cause trouble if you rely on them too much. They are not substitutes for doing the
work yourself (e.g. actually checking your blindspot).
Your feedback:
The course was good! We took a little while to get started, but I think that this
was just because we had to figure out the 30-person cap for the classroom.
I appreciated the activities and the chance to talk in class!

 Road Safety Education Program
Student Full Name: Victor Sheng Heng Zhang
Topic: The OEA Driving strategy, Module 7
Date: Tuesday October 18, 2022
What I learned from this class:
In this class, I learned to observe, evaluate, and anticipate any situation on the
road. From intersections, the other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to the road
signs. I learned as well to always look left, right, left for at least 3 seconds at each
intersection and lean my body forward if there is an obstruction such as a bush or
a heavy vehicle obstructing the view. I must also remain alert in all times on the
road and especially pay attention to my surrounding on days when the weather
condition could be dangerous. An important lesson in Montreal, which is a city
with huge amounts of potholes, is to never break when the wheels are in the
pothole because the car may flip over and cause heavy injuries.

Your feedback:
Mr. Rashid is very determined to make sure all students understand and process
the knowledge learned in class. He does not hesitate to apply positive pressure on
students.

Student Full Name: Minhyuk Hur

Topic: Vehicle
Date: 11/10/2022
What I learned from this class:
We started by looking at the brief history of automobiles and the key components of a vehicle. We also learned about the importance of not entering the car from the backside and to always check the exhaust pipe before starting the vehicle. A pre-driving protocol was also introduced during this course which are:

  • close & lock door, key in ignition
  • Adjust seat and headrest
  • Adjust 3 mirrors
  • Ensure good ventilation
  • Fasten seatbelt
We also learned about the regulations on young kids and infants regarding the seatbelt and its ‘unique’ seats. The most notable example was the one where the infants’ seats should be facing the rear instead of the front.

Your feedback is extremely important to us:
As usual, the instructor Muhammed Rashid, used unique and interesting ways to teach this course and his effort and passion was very appreciated during this course.

What I learned from this class:
Drivers must always observe their environment and evaluate potential risky
situations. Courtesy is the most important rule when driving, and drivers must signal
their intention to other drivers on the road. Drivers must pay particular attention to
protect vulnerable users.
Your feedback:
Mr. Rashid has a lot of useful real life examples and photos which helps
understanding different rules. Mr. Rashid makes sure that everyone in the class
pays attention and understands.

Topic: Eco-driving
Date: July 22 nd 2022
What I learned from this class:
check tire PSI once a month – this allows you to adjust (reduce) rolling resistance
- block heaters used 2h before hitting the road will save 10% to 15% over the first kilometers for outside
cars in Montreal
After 100 km/h, each extra km/h adds 1% of fuel consumption!
- Give a fair amount of following distance (make sure you can see 100% of both wheels) – if
you’re tall, be careful, give more distance!
o If you’re tall, give more distance so that the instructor no matter their height can see
the complete wheels
o SAAQ- officially, 5 meters
- Acceleration resistance
o Eliminate, reduce and recover
o Always look wide and far while driving (helps you plan when to break for stop signs, or
for traffic!)

- Always be careful to NOT USE DIESEL with a GASOLINE CAR
o Always ask what gasoline to use if you’re borrowing a car or renting one
- If you repair things early, it’ll be cheaper and also better!
o Think about break pads, for example
o Maintaining our vehicle is the most ecological/sustainable/ethical way we can consume
cars (e.i. as little as possible, and by sharing as much as possible!)

- If you HAVE to drive in bad conditions (ice)
o Drive slowly, use slippery mode/D1
o Make sure you have your winter/ice tires on
o Always have ice kits in your car in snow times – shovels, brushes, stuff for traction
- Question that will likely come on the exam: MOVE OVER LAW – know the four manoevers for it
and every case you can use it in
o Watch qc video on that
 For police, fire, ambulance, tow trucks, city trucks, the trucks with the flashing
arrows for transport… Remember that surveillance vehicules are involved!
o Know demerit points
- Every city’s signs for parking are different
- Parking uphill: turn wheels to the left (make sure that if parking break fails, the car would end
up on the curb (stopped)
Your feedback: This was a really great class! I felt engaged and like it was a very
productive online class. Mr. Rashid is a wonderful teacher as always, telling us
memorable stories and getting straight to the point of the lessons!

Topic: The Environment
Date: 25/05/2022
What I learned from this class:
This was my first class, and I learned a variety of different points. To mention some of the key points…
  • I should raise my hand under 3 circumstances: (i) when in need of help (ii) to say thank you (iii) to say sorry. This signalling is a sign of courtesy, and it is also used to show your intention.
  • When driving on the highway: We should drive in the right lane. We only drive in the left lane when you want to pass.
  • The cyclist law:
    • When driving at 50 km/h or less à 1 metre distance.
Not respecting this leads to 2 demerit points and 200-300$ fine.
  • When driving at more than 50 km/h à 1.5 metre distance.
  • We cross the solid line only when there is a cyclist, slow motion vehicle (e.g., horse carriage or farm tractor) and when obstructed by construction (like cones). But à we do not cross the solid line when there is an oncoming vehicle.
  • We should remain 5 metres away from the school busà not respecting this rule can lead to 9 demerit points.
  • Speed limit in a school zone à depends on area.
  • Arrow = 1 way street.  No arrow = 2 way street (even in a tight road)
  • You drive at 50 km/h in a town you don’t know.
  • Probationary licence: You get it for 2 years after passing the road test.
    Your feedback:
I really enjoyed the first lesson- and learnt a lot of key points that I wasn’t aware of before. I’m very happy to be part of SAFA driving school- and I am very keen to learn more over the coming weeks.

What I learned from this class: That courtesy to vulnerable users and other drivers is very important while driving. that yielding to the right of way is important. you have to stay away from cyclists from a distance of 1 meter below 50km/h. While parking uphill you have to steer the wheels to the left because if something happens it will go into the sidewalk and prevent it from going on the road or crashing into another car.
Your feedback: Very good teaching, makes us pay good attention to the course!

What I learned from this class:
  • always check you blind spot, if you miss it twice then you will fail exam
  • do an external check before entering vehicle; never enter from the back, always from the front; check exhaust pipe
  • Pre driving protocol: close & lock doors, key in ignition (if there is a key) ; adjust seat and headrest ; adjust the three mirrors ; ensure good ventilation ; fasten seatbelt
  • Drive with two hands at all times : 9:15 position
  • Turn on low beams at least 150 meters from oncoming vehicle
  • A child whose height is less than 63cm must be seated in child safety seat ;  a child less than 145cm or 9 years of age must sit in booster seat
  • Everyone must wear a seatbelt; number of passengers must not exceed number of seatbelts in the vehicle
  • Dec 1st to March 15th = required to use winter tires
  • Eco-driving = gradual acceleration & deceleration + constant speed + maintenance of safety margins >> allows for better anticipation of the behaviour of other road users
  • Download Driver’s Handbook from SAAQ website

Topic:  OEA Strategy
Date: May 18, 2022
What I learned from this class:
- must have a learner's license with me for an in-car session!
-to cancel driving session: call or send email during the week (M-F office hours); missing driving session or not canceling in time, still get charged 40$
- REALLY important class for safety on the road: OEA
- OBSERVE
- EVALUATE
- ACT
ex: you see a driver texting and driving: you evaluate- dangerous- act; increase distance between yourself and the risky driver (do not drive next to, behind, in front)
- anticipation: top to bottom, right to left of windshield- what are you surrounded by? other vehicles, children, road conditions, traffic lights

Road risks: environmental vs. other users
- environmental: weather, potholes, uneven roads, sun in the eyes, big bushes obstructing view around corners, road layout like curves, sharp turns upcoming, steep hills
- vehicles that stop frequently (canada post, delivery, taxi, uber, garbage, recycling trucks)
- risk: not anticipating road sign (eg.
-  fire hydrant: cannot park within 3 metres of red fire hydrant; blue fire hydrant you can park next to without
- sunny day with lots of leafy trees, might obstruct the traffic lights
- slippery roads from rain or snow
- cars parked on slopes; if parking brake fails, could go into the road
- 3 m from stop sign- can park- in Lasalle; downtown, you get a ticket
- Other users: school bus! cyclists, children,
- long following distance, allow for longer braking distance
- truck: need to consider the clearance it needs to turn; pay attention to where it is going, get out of the way!
- ambulance/other emergency vehicles like police or fire truck with flashing lights; must pull over to the right hand side
- cars around you; are they signalling? Are their signals
-blinking green or flashing green; you can go wherever you need to go, all direction
blinking red: like a stop sign, as in a construction site

NEVER BRAKE WHEN HITTING A POTHOLE: WHEELS WILL LOCK INSIDE, CAR CAN FLIP;

When do you look in the rear view mirror? Before applying brake, after applying the brake
- before: see who is behind you! Are you being tailgated? If so, you can get hit/crushed from behind; domino reaction!
- before changing lane, and AFTER changing lane
- before turn, and after turn
- every 5-7 seconds
*the rear-view mirror is your best friend!

- if merging into priority lane: 10-15 km maximum; make sure no car is coming, they have priority;

Your feedback:
Enjoyed the videos we were shown; the news segment about the pothole/car flip, and the SAAQ risk videos. Also, seeing so many photos and being asked to search the images for all the risks really helped to challenge my brain to apply what we’ve learned in different situations and prepare for real-life driving.

Topic: M7 OEA
Date: 18th May 2022

What I learned from this class:
  • Identifying risks, evaluating and acting upon them
  • Different types of green lights, like solid light, directional and flashing green light which means all other directions are red, so you are free to go any direction.
  • If there is a police station / hospital / fire dept. we can only stop 5 meters away from it. But on the opposite side, its 8m, so they can have space to exit their station fast.
  • Sign that says vehicles carrying hazardous object cannot go in tunnels.
  • Not to brake if you are going to hit a pot hole, continue moving, if you are able to avoid hitting the pothole then break, otherwise keep going. If the wheels stop inside a pothole, it’s a bigger risk.
Your feedback:
  • Thank you for the real-life examples and making classes interactive.
  • Great explanation.

Date: July 8th, 2021

What I learned from this class:
- when completing a right turn, you must be going 10-15 km/h. When completing a left turn, you must be going 10 km/h
- eco driving includes maintaining a constant speed while following speed limit, smooth acceleration/deceleration, safe driving, comfort
- eco-driving reduces fuel consumption, reduces the negative impact on the environment and reduces carbon footprint
- Must do a monthly check of tire pressure (PSI), written on sticker on the door of the driver
- reduce speed earlier to have better eco-driving
- do not idle for more than 60 seconds
- Always use same category of gas, there are 3 choices (cheaper to more expensive)
- Check brake pads when getting tires changed (around twice a year)
-move-over law: for tow trucks, emergency vehicles, surveillance vehicles, if stopped on road and have yellow flashing, rotating, or arrow sign lights. Police vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks, transport Quebec vehicles also need to be respected by this law.
- on a hill, turn wheels for safety
Students feedback: The classes thus far have taught me how to be a responsible and safe driver, and I believe to have acquired enough information and knowledge to drive safely in the future. The in-car sessions have also been very useful and have helped me build confidence on the road.

Topic: Module 12 – Eco-Driving
Date: 2021-07-08
What I learned from this class:
In today’s class we first had a review about the steps we must take before turning and changing lane. After that we learned about eco-driving which is a way of driving that is ecological, economical and respectful of road safety conducts. In order to adopt an eco-driving, you have to:
  • Maintain speed
  • Reduce fuel consumption
  • Reduce environmental impact
  • Take account of technological progress
  • Foster road safety
  • Consider the physical reality such as rolling resistance, aerodynamic resistance, Acceleration resistance
    • Choose an appropriate vehicle
    • Adjust tire pressure monthly
    • Eliminate unnecessary weight in the car
The advantages of eco-driving include:
  • Safer driving because of the better anticipation of traffic and calmer driving
  • Comfort for the driver and the passengers since there is less stress and fewer acceleration
Students feedback: I like how in the beginning of the class we review what we discussed in previous classes. Also, everyone questions are answered clearly.

What I learned from this class:
  • When there is a car with only one light, we should change the lane.
  • We should park 1 meter away from a parked car.
  • We cannot stop on a white line when there is a stop sign.
  • We have to look at the rearview mirror for 3 to 5 seconds.
  • We should park 3 meters away from a stop sign.
 Students  feedback:
This class is interesting as usual and we always learn so many good and safe things about driving. I like how our teacher makes this class super interesting!

Topic: At risk Behaviour
Date: May 8, 2021
What I learned from this class:
I learned different risks not to look in the back seat while you’re driving.
You can’t drink and drive.
Never take any risks while driving no matter what because it can cause an accident while you are on the road.
Always make room if you hear the police siren or the fire truck siren and make sure you move out the way.
Make sure you are fully concentrated and not stressed while you are on the road.
 Students feedback:
My first driving school lesson was good.
The teacher was really good and I would recommend this school to other people.

Topic: ECO-DRIVING
Date:2021-05-10
What I learned from this class: We learned tips and tricks for the knowledge and road tests from other students, it is important to study traffic signs and to check rear-view mirror constantly.
Before making a turn, you have to always signal; you should signal at least 3 to 4 houses before turning.
When you stop, don’t forget to look left, right left, then check blind spot and after your turn rear-view mirror again.
When you change lane, don’t forget to look at the rear-view mirror, then signal, then look at the side mirror, then the blind spot, go to that lane, look at rear-view mirror, and finally turn off the signal.
Eco driving is: reduce the environment impact, saving resources, avoid destroying the atmosphere, stop climate change with the way we drive, breaking carefully to save fuel. You can also choose a hybrid vehicle that reduces carbon monoxide, because it is electric and charges instead of using fuel. Eco driving is part of the road test.
City driving uses more gasoline than highway driving because in the city you have to stop more, change speed, etc. whereas in the highway you keep the same speed and make less changes. So, you have to chose the right vehicle according to fuel consumption and eco driving. Also, some aspects of the car can make you spend more money because of fuel consumption. So that is important when buying a car.
Check tire pressure at least once a month. To know the PSI, open the door of the car and check the label that says how much weight the car can handle, the maximum pressure, tire size. This is important when buying winter/summer tires. It is essential to buy the right size. In addition, the more you know your car, the more you are safe.

Acceleration resistance: Eliminate, reduce and recover. Avoid starting the car at a high speed because you will fail the road test. In the winter, use a block heater (2 hours before hitting the road). When you start the car, make sure there is no ice in the mirrors, front and back, otherwise you can get a ticket and it can be dangerous. Another important thing to watch out during the winter is carbon monoxide intoxication, so before entering the vehicle it is important to clean the excess pipe, turn on the car, leave it open and put heating system. Also, in the winter, you have to be careful with the ice and snow because they can make the road slippery and dangerous. It is important to reduce the speed limit, to not to accelerate when the road is icy or slippery, like when there is a snow storm, because it can cause accidents and death.
In general there is 3 types of gasoline 87, 89 and 91… you can’t mix them. For example, if you use 87, you have to keep using 87.
Safer driving, anticipate danger, like people don’t respecting rules and other users of the road like children, calmer driving and more predictable driver behavior.
We also learned that it is important to move over when you see an emergency car flashing its lights, like police cars, ambulances, fire trucks coming your way, it is the law to move over, otherwise you can get a fine 200$ or 300$ and lose 4 demerit points.
Mr. Rashid emphasized that not giving the right of way to other users can also make you lose points. You have to be careful because you start with only 4 points with your learner’s license.

Students feedback: It is very nice that Mr. Rashid gives us tips for the road and knowledge tests. He also asks other students who already took the tests to give advice to other students in the same class, which I find great because it helps the other students.

Topic: M-1 “The Vehicle”
Date: 19/04/2020
What I learned from this class:
Driving notes:
- Always clear exhaust pipe
- Tire pressure is written in a sticker at the door joint on the driver side (check pressure once a
month)
- Level headrest higher than the head (otherwise risk behaviour)
- Smoking while driving is a risk behaviour
- Writing with one hand is failure
- Children less than 63 cm must ride on a child safety seat
- Always stay one meter away from a parked car. This avoids collisions with opening doors
Seat belt:
- No wearing it will cost 3 points of the license
- You can apply to be exempt from wearing a seatbelt under the precedes of a medical condition
- The number of passengers should never exceed the number of available seatbelts in the car
- Pregnant women should also use seatbelt
Tires:
- From Dec 1st until march 15: winter tires must be used, otherwise we could get a fine of $277
- Change tires by November 1st in order to minimize risks (in Quebec it starts snowing early)
- Make sure mechanics tighten up your tires properly before you leave! (Ask for a receipt)

Airbags:
- More airbags = more protection
Visibility:
- Increase field of vision by decreasing speed (inversely proportional)
Part of road test for ECO driving:  Gradual acceleration and deceleration, Constant speed, Maintenance of safety margins
Students  feedback:

- Very fun and interactive
- I like that the teacher shares practical tips to keep us safe
- Good dynamics that keep us involved

Great as always. I like the slides about real-world scenarios where Mr Rashid shows us
images that he and his students have captured themselves. I also like the portions where we discuss the
meaning of some signs in class, I remembered the signs we had seen in class a lot better for my exam. I
really like that important topics that are first taught are re-iterated multiple times, because sometimes
the point can be mis-heard the first time over the internet.-
